Nursing software: eMAR, NEWS2 early warning, tasks and SBAR handover

Medication given only after the bedside checks, vital signs scored as they are recorded, and a handover that carries what the next shift needs.

Why it matters

The ward is where most medication errors and missed deterioration happen: the wrong patient, a dose not on the order, a rising score nobody acted on. Paper charts record what happened, but they do not stop it.

The Ventrecs nursing module puts the checks in the workflow. A dose cannot be recorded until the patient and the drug have been verified, and a vital-signs score that crosses a threshold creates a task for the attending clinician.

What it does

A dose, checked at the bedside

Medication administration record

Schedules come from the verified prescription.

  • Due, overdue and missed doses on a ward view
  • Held, refused and omitted doses recorded with a reason
  • Controlled drugs need a witness

Bedside verification

The checks happen before the dose is recorded.

  • Patient wristband scan and drug barcode (or a double-check when there is no barcode)
  • Allergy acknowledgement
  • Dose, route and time checked against the order, or a reason recorded

Early warning

Vital signs are scored on entry.

  • NEWS2 scored from the recorded vital signs
  • A high score escalates to the attending clinician as a task
  • Stays open until a clinician acknowledges it

Tasks and handover

The next shift starts with the same picture.

  • Nursing tasks with owners and due times
  • SBAR shift handover
  • Fluid balance charts

Built-in safeguards

Recorded administrations are immutableAn administration entry cannot be edited. A correction is a new, linked entry.
A reason is required to deviateA dose outside the order, or one that is held, refused or omitted, needs a reason.
Witness for controlled drugsA controlled drug needs a witness who is not the administering nurse. A self-witnessed entry is rejected.
NEWS2 follows the published bandsScoring follows the Royal College of Physicians NEWS2 bands. Your clinical team signs off adoption and the acknowledgement is kept.

Questions we are asked

What is checked before a dose is given?

The patient wristband and the drug barcode are scanned, or a double-check is used when there is no barcode. The allergy is acknowledged, and dose, route and time are checked against the order.

What happens when a NEWS2 score is high?

The score is calculated when the vital signs are recorded. A high score assigns a task to the attending clinician, and the task stays open until it is acknowledged.

Can we record a dose that was not given?

Yes. Held, refused and omitted doses are recorded with a reason. Nothing is silently skipped.

Does it work with the pharmacy module?

Yes. Administration schedules come from verified prescriptions, and recalled or quarantined stock is blocked at the moment of use.
